On 2nd June !K7 records’ newly created contemporary classical imprint 7K! will release ‘Endless’ — the new album played entirely by Luca D’Alberto — the Italian composer who counts Wim and Donata Wenders, Peter Lindbergh and Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa as fans.

Driven by pristine piano and rich strings, ‘Endless’ is sonically opulent with vivid, wonder-evoking pieces conveying wintry, widescreen panoramas and a propulsive arpeggio-fueled energy.

Luca composed, arranged and played all instruments on ‘Endless’ himself — the violin, viola, violectra, cello and piano. It was produced by Martyn Heyne (who has worked with Nils Frahm, Lubomir Melnyk, Peter Broderick, Tiny Ruins and The National), with additional production by the lauded DJ/musician Henrik Schwarz.

released June 2, 2017

Having previously released recordings of Medtner’s three piano concertos as well as three of Rachmaninov’s five concertante works, Yevgeny Sudbin on the present disc combines solo pieces by the two friends and fellow-composers. From Sergei Rachmaninov’s rich and varied production he has chosen six of the celebrated preludes, including the celebrated ‘Alla marcia’ in G minor (Op.23 No.5) as well as the much-loved Prelude No.12 in G sharp minor from the Op.32 set. But Sudbin, who is a great admirer of Nikolai Medtner, opens his new disc with a generous selection of that composer’s solo piano music. This section begins with the Prologue from Stimmungsbilder, the eighteen-year-old composer’s Opus 1, and closes with Sonata tragica, composed shortly before Medtner left Russia in 1921, never to return. It also includes three of the thirty-some Fairy Tales that Medtner composed throughout his life. ‘No one tells such tales as Kolya’, Rachmaninov used to joke affectionately, and with these pieces Medtner created his own, unique genre. He himself used the Russian word skazka or German Mrchen to describe them, and in his liner notes Yevgeny Sudbin suggests that the creative impulse came not only from folklore but also from such diverse sources as Pushkin, Shakespeare and even the Bible. As an interpreter of both these composers, Sudbin has proven himself both in concert and on disc, with previous recordings being named Disc of the Month in Gramophone, ‘Essential Recording’ in BBC Music Magazine and ’10/10 on ClassicsToday.com, to mention just a few of the distinctions awarded them.

“We hoped that the experience of the music we passionately strived to share with them would speak to them of emotions they had once felt and disentangle some of the knots in their suffering souls. For many years afterwards, I received countless letters from individuals who had attended these concerts; they confirmed my conviction, which had wavered at the time, that music was, after all, an essential element of life.”

This album, reflecting the love affair Pinchas Zukerman has had with English music since the late 1960s, contains the most beloved violin pieces by Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams, the towering figures of the English musical renaissance. Salut d’amour was immensely popular from the beginning but made Elgar virtually no money. The Lark Ascending had to wait until after Vaughan Williams’s death to become renowned throughout the English-speaking world.

Testament to the versatility and musical command that Teodor Currentzis and his unique orchestra and choir possess, this new album brings together two diverse masterworks from two titans of Russian music. Although they have been acquainted for a long time prior, this recording represents the first musical collaboration between Teodor Currentzis and the exceptional violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. The instant artistic rapport (an “artistic wedding” of sorts) between these two maverick musicians can be heard in this dynamic new recording of Tchaikovsky’s Violin concerto — one of the most popular works in the violin repertory. Currentzis’ authentic approach to the folk influences in Stravinsky’s music (as revealed in Le Sacre du Printemps) is again very present in his interpretation of Les Noces. This work for percussion, pianists, chorus, and vocal soloists — originally composed as ballet music — is probably one of Stravinsky’s most rarely recorded works. The work is based on a Russian peasant wedding, which the cover artwork references. Exceptional to this new recording is that the MusicAeterna choir members are all native-Russian speakers who bring another level of understanding and authenticity to the work. After her prominent participation in the “Rameau — The Sound of Light” recording, Nadine Koutcher — freshly crowned “2015 Cardiff Singer of the Year” — returns to sing the leading soprano solo part in Les Noces.
